We Interrupt: A Podcast

Are Interruptions ALWAYS Disruptive?
Is the negative perception of interruptions really true? Could interruptions sometimes be the catalyst for connection, creativity, and necessary changes?
In this podcast, we talk about interruptions with people who study them and live them. We seek to better understand how neurobiology, cognition, language, culture, and organizational structures shape our perceptions and feelings when we experience a minor or major break in the action of our daily lives.
“We Interrupt: A Podcast” is for anyone who enjoys stimulating conversations, challenging the status quo, and being open to new ideas that upend commonly held beliefs.

I am curious. Simply curious. I have deep-seated questions about “interruption” as a concept and social construct – what is it, how might it be useful, how can we help to start evocative conversations about it across a diverse set of perspectives.
I’m curious if interruptions are a means for breaking into power structures and building inclusive frameworks for our communities. I’m here to explore ideas and how those ideas shape our lives and our experiences. I am not making any money on this and am not marketing anything. I just want to stimulate conversation and share sparkling threads.

Right now, it’s really simply to have conversations, share stories, challenge assumptions, and dig into what interruption is and can be in a fun and accessible way.
This all started as an idea for writing a book, and that idea remains. One of the outcomes of the podcast could be a book that collects stories from the podcast and provides context from the research community. I plan to engage with interruption across a range of topics: listening, music, careers, public health, education, neuroscience, violence… to see if a theme crystallizes. I welcome your ideas on what else we should explore!

It’s been word of mouth, but I am hoping that our guests and listeners will introduce us to other folks who have more ideas and perspectives.
I welcome contributors from any country or educational background who do research or have lived experience in how interruptions shape our lives. Due to my own linguistic and geographic limitations, I do the interview in English using remote computer-based platforms like Zoom.

This podcast series is all about stories – weaving stories together. My guests are co-creators of the content and I want this to feel like – and be! – a safe and fun process of exploration.

Nope. I am doing this podcast just for fun and to fulfill my curiosity. Life is short. Do fun things while you can! Podcast content will be available under a CC-BY 4.0 license and once I release the podcast, folks out there in the world can use clips in other products with attribution under this license.
And I am not looking to plug products on behalf of contributors - this isn’t a marketing opportunity. This is about stories and ideas. We’ll include links to content referenced in the conversation in the episode notes on SoundCloud and on our website, and we welcome links from participants to orient listeners to additional relevant content there.
